Death by Chocolate – Literally! Don’t poison your loved ones!
Duncan Hines Milk Chocolate Brownies are just one example of the convenience foods out there that are riddled with harmful ingredients lurking on shelves at a grocery store near you!
Firstly let me start by saying…my name is Food Girl and I am a choc-o-holic. There, I said it. So it pains me when I catch companies such as Duncan Hines turning what can be a perfectly delicious, healthy treat into a death bomb, giving all other chocolate a bad wrap.
Raw cacao itself is considered a “superfood.” It’s unsweetened, unprocessed, unrefined chocolate which acts as a natural energizer and mood elevator so you wouldn’t experience insulin crashes like refined sugary snacks cause. However, as you will discover in this deceiving treat of death in a box, all the natural goodness from the ingredients used have been stripped of any nutritional value. In-fact, they have been transformed so much as to act as poisons!
Let’s have a closer look shall we? Here are the ingredients straight off the side of the box:
Sugar, Enriched Bleached Wheat Flour (Flour, Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamine Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Vegetable Oil Shortening (Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil), Cocoa Processed with Alkali, Cream Powder (Cream, Nonfat Milk, Soy Lecithin). Contains 2% Or Less Of: Wheat Starch, Dextrose, Salt, Maltodextrin, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Acacia and Xanthan Gums, Natural and Artificial Flavor (Maltodextrin, Modified Corn Starch, Medium Chain Triglycerides, Natural and Artificial Flavor), Leavening (Sodium Bicarbonate).
All I can see is trans fats, GMO, poison, beaver anus, and more hidden harmful possibilities!
First offense is the use of enriched bleached wheat flour. I think the first flag should be obvious when a perfectly good ingredient, wheat flour, has the word bleached in front of it. This is because they chemical treat the grain to produce alloxan giving it it’s clean and white characteristics. This process of “refining” however, destroys nutrients and essentially turns the flour into nothing but a form of sugar.
Dr. Mercola, trained in both traditional and natural medicine lists, in his article “The little known secrets about bleached flour”, the losses from this refining process:
- Half of the beneficial unsaturated fatty acids
- Virtually all of the vitamin E
- Fifty percent of the calcium
- Seventy percent of the phosphorus
- Eighty percent of the iron
- Ninety eight percent of the magnesium
- Fifty to 80 percent of the B vitamins
- And many more.
Mercola also explains that, not only is this ingredient now rid of any nutritional value, but is instead made into a now potentially harmful chemical: alloxan!
“Alloxan, or C4 H2O4N2, is a product of the decomposition of uric acid. It is a poison that is used to produce diabetes in healthy experimental animals (primarily rats and mice), so that researchers can then study diabetes “treatments” in the lab. Alloxan causes diabetes because it spins up enormous amounts of free radicals in pancreatic beta cells, thus destroying them.
Beta cells are the primary cell type in areas of your pancreas called islets of Langerhans, and they produce insulin; so if those are destroyed, you get diabetes.
There is no other commercial application for alloxan — it is used exclusively in the medical research industry because it is so highly toxic.”
At a conference I recently attended about the true cost of food, Dr. Pete Myers, biologist and CEO of Environmental Health Sciences explores the scientific basis of concern for how contamination threatens health, specifically in fetal development. Dr. Myers demonstrated how even the smallest amounts of pesticides and chemicals ingested from our everyday interaction with food today are causing us harm; “small doses matter!” – Pete Myers.
The next offender is thiamine mononitrate, a synthetic form of vitamin B1. Although we all need vitamin B1 in our diets, and excess vitamin B1 is excreted from the body efficiently, the fat-soluble synthetic version may accumulate in the liver and other fatty tissues. Accumulation of any vitamin, including thiamine mononitrate, will eventually cause cellular toxicity and can lead to severe liver damage. Since thiamine mononitrate is stored in fat cells, simply stopping ingestion will not reverse the effects of chronic exposure to this synthetic vitamin.
Then we have come to an ingredient in this product that has been claimed to be one of the most harmful ingredients in processed foods; Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil.
So often consumers are tricked and confused by companies slyly using and twisting how ingredients are labelled. Most of us would consider “partially” better than “full” and soybean must be healthy as we’ve been blasted with so much media coverage on the health benefits of soya right? Think again. PHSO is nothing but trans-fat and genetically modified garbage!
Here’s why: Can lead to…
And all to extend the shelf life of these products! So we are trading our health for convenience!?? Not me thanks!
Next on the list of disgraceful adulterations of a perfectly fine ingredient; Cocoa Processed with Alkali: Natural cocoa powder is lightly coloured and has a somewhat sharp acidic flavour. Processing it with alkali neutralizes the acidity and makes the taste milder and the colour darker. This treatment is called “the Dutch process” because it was developed by a Dutch chocolatier named Coenraad Johannes van Houten. The cocoa powder that results is much sweeter and mixes with liquids more easily, which makes it ideal for this instant brownie mix. However, this Dutch process, as mentioned above, reduces the amount of natural flavonols, or antioxidants, in the cocoa powder leaving it to once again be nothing but sugar. Such a waste!
Next, this seemingly harmless ingredient has more than meets the eye; Maltodextrin: This is yet another form of sugar (shock – more sugar **hear my sarcasm?) called a “polysaccharide” produced from a natural starch (such as corn in the United States and wheat in Europe). It is absorbed easily and rapidly by the human body. It is often used as part of the coating on snack foods and as a thickening agent in things such as salad dressings and sauces.
Although it is produced naturally by cooking the corn/wheat and not from chemicals, this artificial sweetner, which is not very sweet to the taste, acts like sugar to your body. Your body takes it in as sugar and reacts to it in much the same way as it does to any other sugar. Because it is more quickly absorbed than sugar, it goes to work even faster. Your body interprets it as sweet even if your tongue does not and it has the same effect as other sugars, giving your body a short-term energy high and leaving your body and you craving more. So although it is not generally harmful, it is likely to encourage, like many other food ingredients and additives, over-consumption. Also, these artificial sweetners are known to spike insulin levels due to the bodies reaction to it like sugar, causing energy crashes and restless sleep.
I didn’t even plan to save this to last, and no doubt the Duncan Hines food company certainly thought they could hide a variety of chemicals and additives as many companies do under the heading of; Artificial Flavouring:
This still blows me away. How can we offer a sneaky hide out under our own government regulations that allow companies to stash harmful chemicals without disclosing them to the public? If you haven’t already read about the use of castoreum – yes BEAVER ANUS GLANDS in food and beverages – even beers – read my post here. But this is just one example (and at least beaver butt is natural and not poisonous). There are many hidden ingredients in our foods which are allowed to be listed as artificial flavourings.
I did some digging and discovered that a new company called Senomyx has contracted with the likes of Kraft, Nestle, Coca Cola, Campbell Soup and more to put a chemical in foods that masks bitter flavours by turning off bitter flavour receptors on the tongue in order to enhance salty and sweet flavours instead. This would allow these food conglomerate to tout claims such as “less sugar” or “lower sodium” by reducing the actual sugar and/or salt by approximately half, but the foods would retain the same level of sweetness or saltiness when they touch the tongue by fooling your brain. At first this may seem like a fantastic idea considering public health, the governments and many of us of the general public are asking for a reduction of sugar and salt in our foods, however, at what cost? The chemical being used as a replacement was only tested under a three month study! Which is outrageous as such meddling with our food should require a minimum of a 2 year observation time before being released.
According to the Weston A. Price Foundation, “Since these [chemicals] are not actually ingredients but rather ‘enhancers’ they are not required to be listed in a package’s ingredients except as ‘artificial flavors’ … [And] because very small amounts of the additives are used … Senomyx’s chemicals have not undergone the FDA’s usual safety approval process for food additives.”
Funny that, considering the biggest food companies (or simply biggest companies in general) are involved, and laws and health regulations seem to pass them by. I urge you to not let another ploy for profits jeopardize your health! Don’t let these sly companies sneak additives into your food that have yet to be fully tested leaving us to be the guinea pigs while they fatten their pockets. It’s just a disgusting breach of trust, integrity and more blatantly, human rights. We have the right to know what is in our food! We are citizens not just consumers and we can have our say!

To avoid harmful, killer trans fats, poisonous chemicals, and gosh knows what else hidden under the label of “Artificial Flavourings”, as well as to get the most out of a delicious treat if you’re going to have one – why not make your own?
For Christmas this year I decided to make homemade treats to not only show my appreciation for teachers, neighbours, friends and family, but also to demonstrate that healthy doesn’t have to mean not tasty! I made my very own Death by Chocolate Brownies that will kill you with their deliciousness and not with processed ingredients. These DIY brownies in a jar are just as instant as the store bought, requiring your recipients to only require organic/free range eggs, water and organic reduced salt butter. They make the perfect gifts and can be decorated in all sorts of ways!
I’ve chosen to make my low-carb and reduced the amount of whole wheat flour in order to include coconut flour. Try this:
- In the Jar:
- 1/2 tsp fine sea salt
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 95 g whole wheat flour
- 40 g raw organic cocoa
- 135 g raw organic coconut sugar/brown sugar
- 75 g raw organic coconut flour/almond flour
- 150 g stevia
- 100 g chocolate chips
- 60 g walnuts or pecans (optional)
- 150g melted organic, reduced salt butter
- 3 beaten organic/free range eggs
- 1/2 cup water
1. Layer the dry ingredients in a one litre mason jar, following the order above, from top, starting with the baking powder and flour. Press each layer down before adding the next (I used a spoon). You will need to fill the ingredients to the top so they do not shift around in transport and ruin your work – so add in extra chocolate chips or nuts.
2. Seal the jar but not before adding a piece of thin decorative cloth after the first lid has been laid and before the twist cap is to be sealed on.
3. Don’t forget to include a tag with the following instructions: Combine the contents of the jar with 150g melted organic, reduced salt butter and 3 beaten organic/free-range eggs. Mix well, and pour into a lined 9 x 9 inch tin. Bake at Gas 4 / 180 C (160 fan) / 350 F for 25-35 minutes and enjoy!
Let me know how they work out! I already have devoured mine!
